AI Automation vs. AI Agents: My Take
How I decide when a business needs deterministic automation, an AI agent, or a combination of both.
By Damir Grubisa, CEO of Group 4 Networks ยท Executive perspective
Do not use AI where a rule is better
Traditional automation remains the right answer for predictable workflows. If a process can be expressed as reliable rules, it is often easier to test, audit and maintain without adding an AI decision layer.
Agents earn their place with ambiguity
AI agents become valuable when the input varies, language matters, context changes or the system must choose among approved actions. That is different from simply scheduling a script.
The best architecture is often hybrid
In practice I expect more systems to use AI for interpretation, deterministic automation for known actions and human approval for higher-risk exceptions.
Start with the business process
The technology should follow the workflow. I would rather deploy a simple automation that reliably solves a problem than a sophisticated agent that creates uncertainty without improving the outcome.
